Quincy University (QU) is invested in student success.  In order to continue helping students succeed, it is important for us to know what you think about your undergraduate experience.  QU will be administering the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) in Spring 2023 to first-year and senior bachelor’s degree-seeking students. The survey, which is voluntary and confidential, assesses the link between student engagement and a high quality undergraduate experience.  It helps provide campus leaders with an accurate picture of QU student life.  Don’t miss out on this opportunity to share information about your experiences both inside and outside of the classroom. Your voice can help make a difference in the future direction of Quincy University!

What is the NSSE (pronounced “nessie”)?

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) collects information from hundreds of four-year colleges and universities about first-year and senior students’ participation in programs and activities that institutions provide for their learning and personal development. The results provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending college. In addition, NSSE provides participating institutions reports that compare student responses to peer institutions. The NSSE project is governed by the Indiana University Bloomington IRB.  Additional information be found by visiting About NSSE.

Who is surveyed?

The survey is designed to capture the experience of students who are at the beginning of their educational career, along with those who are nearing graduation.  All first-year and senior bachelor’s degree-seeking students are included in the NSSE population file. Adult learners, full-time and part-time students, commuters and campus residents, and distance education students who meet credit hour requirements are included.

Has Quincy University participated in this survey before?

Yes.  QU has participated in spring of 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2018, 2019 and now in 2023.

What does the NSSE survey ask?

The NSSE survey contains mostly multiple-choice questions with a few open-ended comments.  The survey will ask undergraduates about their:

  • in- and out-of-class activities
  • academic advisors and support services
  • experiences with faculty
  • level of academic challenge including thoughts on what they have gained from classes
  • assessment of the quality of interactions with faculty and students, and other educational activities (e.g. undergraduate research, study abroad, & internships).

When and how will the survey be administered?

Students will receive email invitations with personalized links to the survey in February of the Spring 2023 semester.  The survey takes about 10-15 minutes to complete. Check this website for updates.

How will the survey results be used?

The results of the survey are used to identify what QU is doing well, and what areas would benefit from change or improvement.  Aggregate results will be analyzed and shared with QU campus leaders to:

  • support accreditation efforts
  • identify additional areas for supporting student success
  • evaluate policies and best practices related to the student experience
  • support student retention efforts
  • analyze comparison responses from other Catholic colleges and universities
  • identify areas for program improvement
  • make future assessment plans
